Each dog's training program is customized to accommodate the unique needs of individuals with various types of disabilities.

Summary – The person in this position is responsible for maintaining the dogs and cats on behalf of PAWS in a clean and healthy manner by bathing, grooming, trimming, teeth cleaning, and ear cleaning.

Supervisory Responsibilities – This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Be able to maintain a rotation schedule of grooming multiple dogs in a day to keep all dogs throughout all kennels in all buildings clean and healthy
  • Following PAWS’ grooming standards for preparing the dog for placement or client interaction
  • Maintain accurate grooming records
  • Determine clipping pattern desired based upon breed standards, or client’s request
  • Bathe dogs
  • Comb, shape and brush the dog’s coat
  • Trim or shave the dog’s coat
  • Clean and scrape teeth
  • Clean, pluck, shave, and trim hair in and around the ears and ear canal
  • Groom dogs and cats inclusive of clipping their nails and cleaning their ears
  • Provide support and coverage in the Building Care Department as needed and necessary
  • Calms dogs to be able to groom them
  • Works with the dogs to prepare them for a lifetime of being professionally groomed when living with a client with a disability who cannot groom the dogs themselves.


  • Design workflows and procedures and demonstrates attention to detail to be able to provide quality grooming so that the dogs look appropriate out on Public Access when working with our training staff and in the community

Computer Skills                                              


To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a working knowledge and proficiency in Word Processing software (Word), Email Communication Programs (Outlook/Office 365), Spreadsheets (Excel), Power Point, CRM, and any other data collection software preferred. The ability to understand and utilize the various computer programs is needed to produce reports, letters, etc. that are required to perform the job.



Language Skills


Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Reasoning Ability


Ability to anticipate problems and issues; Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret statistical data.




Education and/or Experience                                              


High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Possessing a minimum of three years’ experience as a professional groomer and or a certificate of completion from an accredited grooming school, or an equivalent of combined experience with a certificate.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations


Certificate from a professional dog grooming school or equivalent of several years of professional dog grooming experience.


Must have a current driver's license, and the points must not exceed the allotted amount to be covered under PAWS vehicle insurance. Must have reliable transportation.


Other Qualifications                                       


  • Previous dog handling experience
  • Knowledge in bathing, teeth and ear cleaning, nail trimming and other grooming functions in accordance with this job description of Groomer
  • Ability to work independently and within guidelines of a Groomer
  • Follows policies and procedures i.e. wearing gloves, splash goggles, and an apron while bathing animals
  • Ability to walk the dogs on leash from the kennel area and transport them to grooming room and back in a safe and acceptable manner, after receiving proper training by a training staff member
  • Ability to transport cats to grooming area, to brush, bathe, clean ears, and trim nails in a manner which is safe for the groomer and the cats
  • Ability to maintain and groom a high number of dogs per day to maintain the number of dogs in all PAWS kennels to achieve the goal of always keeping all dogs housed within PAWS, clean and healthy at all times
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of this position with minimal supervision
  • Ability to attain set goals and expectations for the position as set forth by the Department Supervisor on an annual basis


Physical Demands


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical mobility is required in this position including walking, squatting, stooping, bending, standing, reaching, lifting, moving, pulling, and jerking dogs weighing up to 100lbs. Manual dexterity is required in this position including washing, drying, handling, lifting, and moving dogs weighing up to 100 lbs; operating implements and equipment and other movements with hands in the course of this position.


Allocation of Time


Bathing dogs – 50%

Drying dogs – 15%

Nail trimming – 5%

Teeth cleaning – 5%

Ear cleaning – 5%

Brushing/Combing dogs - 5%

Walking/Exercising dogs – 5%

Janitorial – 10%


Working Environment


The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.


  1. Animal-related environment with as many as (100) dogs residing on-site at any given time.
  2. Dress code consists of a professional appearance required at all times.


Hours of Work


This is a full-time hourly position with base hours of 40 hours per week, normally scheduling working days are Monday through Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm. Overtime only permitted with prior approval from the Supervisor; overtime would be calculated at one and a half times the regular rate of pay for any hours worked over 40. Some weekend work may be needed from time to time to accomplish the essential job functions of this position. Advance notice will be given if weekend work is ever requested.
